Caring For Your Blinds And Shutters

Here at Direct Blinds, we love finding the perfect window blinds or shutters for each customer, and we work hard to make sure that we get it right every time. We ensure that we always give comprehensive advice on how to care for your blinds or shutters, but we are often asked about the best ways to keep them looking great.

When you’ve chosen beautiful new blinds or shutters for your home, you’ll want to keep them in good condition and ensure that they last as long as possible. The weather, dust, pets, children and smoke can all shorten the life of your blinds or shutters, and learning how to clean and maintain them can extend their life and ensure that they look their best for longer.

How To Clean Window Blinds and Shutters

Whether your blinds or shutters need a quick refresh or a deep clean, you’ll find that cleaning them is much easier if you follow our simple guide. Here’s how to get the best results:

  1. Dust the slats. Decide whether you have better access to the slats if they are open or closed, and dust each slat, working from top to bottom of the blind. Using a damp cloth, or a sock or glove on your hand, can make this task even easier, and you can also buy tools designed for this purpose.
  2. Vacuum your blinds or shutters. Vacuuming can be a great way to clean your blinds when you’re short of time. Use a brush attachment to avoid damaging your slats and to ensure that you get the best results, and always start from the top of the blind and work downwards.
  3. Wash your blinds. Washing your blinds is more time consuming but ensures a more thorough clean, so may be a job you do once a year. You should remove your blinds from your windows and place them in a bucket or bathtub containing cleaning solution. You can use white vinegar and lavender oil for an easy homemade solution. Allow the slats to soak for ten minutes, and gently scrub them with a soft brush. Rinse them in clean water, and allow them to dry completely before you rehang them. You can use a spray and cloth to wash shutters or slats that cannot be removed, but do not forget to wipe them dry thoroughly.
